Finding the right batting gloves is about more than choosing “junior” or “adult”. A comfortable, secure fit helps protect your hands and keeps your grip natural.
Why fit is so important
Batting gloves need to protect the hands without making it difficult to hold the bat. Gloves that are too small can restrict movement; gloves that are too large can bunch around the fingers and affect grip.
How to measure your hand
Use a flexible tape or ruler and follow the specific manufacturer’s measuring method. Many brands provide a hand-length chart, typically measuring from the wrist crease to the tip of the middle finger. Compare the result with that brand’s chart rather than relying on a generic “adult” or “junior” label.
Check finger length
With the gloves on, your fingertips should sit comfortably within the fingers without being crushed against the ends. Excess material beyond the fingertips can make bat control awkward.
Check grip and wrist movement
Hold a cricket bat in your normal grip and practise a few gentle movements. You should be able to close your hands securely around the handle, move your wrists and release the grip without resistance.
Right-handed or left-handed?
Many batting glove ranges offer right-hand and left-hand configurations because protection can be distributed differently. Select the option intended for your batting stance and check the retailer’s description carefully.
Junior sizing and growth
Avoid buying significantly oversized gloves to allow for growth. Protection and control matter now. If a child sits between sizes, compare the actual measurements and fit guidance for the models being considered.
What to check when ordering online
Confirm brand, model, size and batting hand before ordering. Retailer listings may use different terminology, so verify the exact variant. When comparing stock, a glove available in “Adult” is not necessarily available in your required adult size.
The takeaway
Measure, consult the manufacturer’s chart and test the grip where possible. The right glove should feel secure, flexible and easy to use.
