Winter nets are often where a new cricket season really begins. A quick kit check now can save a last-minute scramble when training starts.
Winter nets are the perfect time to check your kit
Indoor sessions are a chance to work on technique before the outdoor season, but they also highlight equipment that no longer fits. Before the first session, ask the coach what kind of ball will be used and what the venue allows.
Footwear comes first
Many sports halls require clean, non-marking rubber soles and prohibit spikes. Some specialist indoor facilities have different rules. Check the venue guidance rather than assuming your outdoor cricket shoes will be suitable.
Hard-ball protection
For hard-ball batting, bring the protective equipment required by your club: typically a correctly fitting helmet, batting gloves, pads and a box. Coaches may also require protection for other drills. Make sure junior players have not outgrown last season’s equipment.
Bring a bat you can control
A bat that felt right last summer may now be too short for a growing child, or a heavier replacement may feel awkward. Check size and pickup before the session, not after the first delivery.
Practical extras
Pack water, comfortable training clothing, a towel, spare socks and any medication or personal items normally needed. Label junior kit clearly; indoor sessions can involve lots of similar-looking bags and gloves.
Use winter to plan ahead
If your preferred size is unavailable, start looking early rather than waiting for spring. Compare several retailers and verify the exact size, batting hand and model before ordering.
Winter nets checklist
Shoes approved for the venue; bat; gloves; pads; helmet and other protection as required; training clothes; water; and a kit bag. Confirm any club-specific requirements before attending.
The takeaway
Check venue rules, check fit and check availability early. A little preparation makes winter sessions easier and more enjoyable.
